FANTASTIC FUNGI

Fungi are fantastic.  Fungi are a kingdom of microscopic organisms, such as mushrooms, yeast and moulds.
The type of cell wall surrounding each of their cells is what makes fungi different from all other living organisms.
There are 144.000  known species of the organism of the fungi kingdom.  Yeast, rust, mildew, moulds and mushrooms are part of that kingdom.
Fungi are found in just about any habitat on land but mainly in soil or plant material. Mushrooms are fantastic.
Talking about fungi and their kingdom, I want to introduce you to a fantastic man from another realm. The qualities and attributes of this man make him both gracious yet powerful and full of integrity.  Such a man is worth knowing. This man is easily known – his name is Jesus Christ, Son of God – son of man, preacher, carpenter, healer and all-round nice guy.
Jesus is powerful ( he created the universe), and he has power.  Jesus power is not apparent; it’s hidden just like the rising power of yeast is hidden. Think of bread, add yeast and the dough rises and increases in volume to feed many people. A pinch of yeast will feed many people.
Jesus reminds me of the yeast. Anyone who comes to him with an inner emptiness in their heart will find fulfilment, and they will never hunger again, they will be fulfilled, satisfied, whole.  Jesus said, John 6: 35, ‘I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. As yeast is for the dough,  so Jesus, God’s only son, is for the human heart. Bread soon rots, but Jesus never dies. He is eternal, and he makes us immortal with him. Though we may die, it is only our body that decays. Our real self, our spirit is eternal through faith in Christ.

Moulds are part of the fungi kingdom and grow on stale and rotting food. When we see mould growing on our food, we throw it out. It is from the mould growing on outdated foodstuffs that science discovered penicillin.  Penicillin is an antibiotic; it heals many of our ills. It was a wonder drug of its day. Penicillin is a healer, and so is Jesus.  The bible refers to him as healing everyone who came to him for help.  Those who received no healing didn’t believe him. The kingdom of mushrooms is bountiful and beautiful, life-giving, but also poisonous. Jesus is anathema to many people, but to those who believe and submit their life to him, he is life-giving, healing, freeing.

Unlike the properties of yeast and moulds, still hidden, Jesus is inviting the whole world to follow him. He died on a wooden cross for all the world to see, believe and be saved. Romans 10: 13.  LB,  ‘Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord, are saved.’
